- Two characters beat one. A single face is a mascot; two facing each other is a scene, and people read a story into it immediately.
- Say whether the background comes along. Rendering the whole photo in the same style looks deliberate; a cartoon face on an untouched photograph looks like a sticker.
- Give them an attitude, not just a face. “smug”, “startled”, “deeply unimpressed” does far more than “happy”.
